THE HAKIMI "TROPHY REJECTION" HOAX: EVEN MAJOR NEWS OUTLETS GOT IT WRONG

If you’ve been on social media lately, you’ve likely seen the bombshell: Achraf Hakimi has reportedly rejected the 2025 AFCON trophy, claiming his mother told him to give it back to Senegal.
It’s a beautiful story of sportsmanship and "mama’s boy" integrity. There’s just one problem: It never happened.
THE VIRAL CLAIM
Multiple viral posts—some even mimicking the branding of Fabrizio Romano or Marca—claim that the Moroccan captain went public to refuse the title. The posts quote him saying: "My mum told me to reject the AFCON trophy... Senegal beat us fairly on the pitch."
When "Verified" Sources Fall for Fake News
What makes this hoax particularly dangerous is that it didn't just stay in the dark corners of the internet. Several notable news agencies, including ZBC News Online, fell for the bulletin and reported it as fact on their official X (formerly Twitter) handles.
By sharing the fabricated quotes to their massive audiences, these "verified" outlets gave the story a false sense of legitimacy, leading thousands of fans to believe the rejection was official.
THE REALITY CHECK
Let’s set the record straight before the "share" button does any more damage:

   1. NO OFFICIAL STATEMENT: Achraf Hakimi  has not posted this on his official X, Instagram, or Facebook accounts. No reputable sports outlet has interviewed him regarding a "rejection."
   2. FABRIZIO ROMANO DID NOT REPORT THIS:  Despite the screenshots circulating, the world’s most famous transfer specialist has remained silent on this. The "reports" are digital fabrications.

   3. THE ACTUAL RULING: On March 17, 2026, CAF officially awarded the 2025 title to Morocco after a legal ruling involving Senegal’s 17-minute walk-off protest during the final. While the decision is highly controversial and currently heading to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the trophy remains officially with Morocco.
   4. THE "MOM" QUOTE TROPE: This specific narrative—attributing life-altering career decisions to his mother—is a common "template" used by fake news pages to gain engagement because of Hakimi’s well-known close relationship with her.

THE BOTTOM LINE
As of today, Achraf Hakimi  is a 2025 AFCON Champion. Whether you agree with the CAF ruling or not, don't let a "copy-paste" social media story—or a hasty report from a major news agency—convince you the Moroccan star has handed the trophy back.
Always check for official statements from the player or the national team before hitting share.
