Zimbabwe's Kariba ferry disaster has now surpassed the infamous Nyanga Bus Disaster of 1991, becoming the deadliest transport tragedy in the country's recorded history.

The confirmed death toll from the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) ferry disaster on Lake Kariba has risen to 92, following the recovery of eight more bodies on Monday, 17 August 2026.

The grim figure is three higher than the 89 lives lost in the Nyanga Bus Disaster on 3 August 1991.

For 35 years, the Nyanga tragedy — which claimed the lives of 89 people, including 82 schoolchildren — stood as Zimbabwe's deadliest road transport disaster.
That grim record has now been surpassed.

A Haunting August Parallel

There is an especially chilling coincidence.

The Nyanga Bus Disaster happened in August 1991.

The Kariba ferry disaster happened in August 2026 — exactly 35 years later.

Nyanga: 89 deaths.

Kariba: 92 deaths — and the search continues.

Two of Zimbabwe's darkest transport tragedies have therefore been separated by 35 years, yet both have left the nation mourning during the same month.

But the final toll may not yet be known

The tragedy is accompanied by continuing questions over exactly how many people were aboard the ill-fated ferry when it left Kariba.

The vessel was licensed to carry 90 people, yet officials have said there were 114 adult passengers, five crew members and an unspecified number of children aboard. Earlier reports had also put the total number of people aboard at around 153.

With 77 people reportedly rescued alive and 92 bodies now recovered, at least 169 people have already been accounted for — raising further questions about the actual passenger manifest.

The search and recovery operation remains ongoing.

A Record Nobody Wanted to Break

Surpassing Nyanga is not a milestone Zimbabwe should ever have had to witness.

These are not merely numbers competing for a place in history.

Every number represents a life.

Every victim was someone's child, parent, sibling, relative, friend or breadwinner.

As Zimbabwe mourns the 92 confirmed victims of the Kariba disaster, the nation must also confront the questions surrounding passenger capacity, maritime safety, emergency response and accountability.

The Nyanga tragedy taught Zimbabwe painful lessons.

Kariba must not become another tragedy from which lessons are learned only after lives have been lost.

For now, one fact stands starkly in Zimbabwe's history:

After 35 years, the Nyanga record has been surpassed.

Nyanga — 89.

Kariba — 92.

And the search is still continuing.
